CAUGHNAWAGA - KAHANAWAKE.
Kring år 1700 levde två tredjedelar av Mohawkirokeserna i Kanada. De flesta i en by på sydsidan av St Lawarence vid Sault St Louis (Lachine Rapids), en by som hade grundats 1676. Själva kallade de sin stad för Caughnawaga, ett namn som tidigare funnits i Mohawkdalen. Byn byggdes upp en andra gång längre upp för floden efter massakern i Lachine 1690 och flyttades åter igen 1696 och igen 1714. Två år senare fann man sin fasta och nuvarande plats ”Canadian Mohawk Reserve” och mer ofta stavas bynamnet Kahnawake.
